A yeast infection is a common vaginal infection many women experience at some point in their lives. Though they can be uncomfortable, they are not usually serious. However, it is important to know how to avoid yeast infections.
Who is at Risk for Yeast Infections?
A yeast infection is an overgrowth of the Candida Albicans Fungus, a type of yeast. This fungus is found in small amounts in the vagina, as well as in the mouth and digestive tract. Women of all ages are susceptible to yeast infections.
When the delicate balance of bacteria and yeast in the vagina is disturbed, it can lead to an overgrowth of yeast, resulting in a yeast infection.
What Causes the Imbalance?
Several things can cause this imbalance, such as taking antibiotics, pregnancy, diabetes, or a weakened immune system.
How to Avoid Yeast Infections
The good news is that you can do things to avoid getting a yeast infection. Here are four tips for how to avoid yeast infections.
1. Wear Cotton Underwear and Loose-Fitting Clothes
Tight-fitting clothes trap moisture and heat, leading to an overgrowth of yeast. Cotton underwear allows air to circulate and helps keep you dry.
2. Avoid Scented Products
Scented tampons, pads, sprays, and soaps can all irritate the vagina and lead to an infection. If you must use scented products, be sure only to put them on the outside of the body.
3. Change Out of Wet Clothes
Change out of wet clothes soon after swimming or working out. Again, this prevents yeast from having a chance to grow in a warm, moist environment.
This helps prevent bacteria from getting into your vagina and causing an infection.
4. Practice Good Hygiene Without Overdoing It
Wipe from front to back after using the bathroom.
When you bathe, be sure to dry yourself thoroughly before getting dressed. And don’t forget to cleanse your vaginal area with mild soap and water daily as part of your regular hygiene routine!
