Menstrual Irregularities

Menstrual Irregularities

A normal menstrual cycle lasts 28 days. If menstrual bleeding occurs more frequently than every 21 days or lasts longer the 8 days, it is considered to be irregular. Late, early, or missed periods are also considered to be signs of menstrual irregularity. Irregular periods can be related to several different issues:

  • Anovulation – a condition where ovulation has not
taken place during the menstrual cycle due to hormonal imbalance.
  • Dysmenorrhea – menstrual pain.
  • Ovulatory bleeding – heavy or prolonged menstrual bleeding.

Common Causes of Menstrual Irregularities

Various conditions, including pregnancy, hormonal imbalances, infections, malignancies, diseases, trauma, and certain medications, can cause menstrual irregularities. The following are some other common causes:

  • Extreme exercise or dieting
  • Hyperthyroidism
  • Sexually transmitted infections
  • Uncontrolled diabetes
  • Eating disorders
  • Structural problems
  • Bleeding disorders

Menstrual irregularities adversely affect the quality of life for many women. If you suffer from menstrual irregularities, it may be the first clue that you have a medical condition that needs attention. It is a good idea to be checked out by a doctor to rule out any serious health issues and to help alleviate your symptoms. Put your mind at ease.
