What are Ultrasounds?
Ultrasounds are an excellent tool for a good reason. They allow doctors to get a clear picture of the baby without having to do any invasive procedures.
Ultrasounds use high-frequency sound waves to create an image of your baby in your uterus (womb). Your doctor uses them to check your baby’s growth and development. It’s also used to check your placenta’s position (the organ that provides nutrients and oxygen to your baby during pregnancy). Ultrasounds are painless and have no known side effects.
That being said, only to have ultrasounds when they are medically necessary. Having too many can cause unnecessary stress and anxiety. It’s best to have them when your doctor recommends them.
When Are Ultrasounds Performed During Pregnancy?
The number of ultrasounds and timing depends on each woman’s health and her healthcare provider’s recommendations.
For example, women with high risk for complications such as preterm labor or placental problems, may have more frequent ultrasounds. Or you might have more ultrasounds if you are pregnant with multiples.
OBGNs typically performs an ultrasound between 18-20 weeks of pregnancy to assess the growth and development of your baby and check for any birth defects.
