A normal menstrual cycle lasts 28 days. If menstrual bleeding occurs more frequently than every 21 days or lasts irregular periodslonger the 8 days, it is considered to be irregular. Late, early, or missed periods are also considered to be signs of menstrual irregularies. Irregular periods can be related to several different issues:

 

  • Anovulation – a condition where ovulation has not taken place during the menstrual cycle due to hormonal imbalance.
  • Dysmenorrhea – menstrual pain.
  • Ovulatory bleeding – heavy or prolonged menstrual bleeding.

Common Causes of Menstrual Irregularities

Menstrual irregularities can be caused by a variety of conditions, including pregnancy, hormonal imbalances, infections, malignancies, diseases, trauma, and certain medications.  The following are some other common causes:

Extreme exercise or dieting

Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS Other illnesses.)

Hyperthyroidism

Hyperprolactinemia

Sexually transmitted diseases

Uncontrolled diabetes

Fibroids

Eating disorders

Structural problems

Bleeding disorders
